Someone Who Has Actually Done It

One-to-one mentoring and coaching for CEOs, founders, and senior leaders at critical points in their journey.

Most Leadership Advice Comes from the Sidelines

There is no shortage of coaches. There is a shortage of people who have genuinely been where you are - who have founded a business and grown it, led a global operation under pressure, sat in the chair when the decision was real, the stakes were high, and getting it wrong was not an option.

That is the difference here.

This is not a programme. It is not a framework. It is a direct, honest, one-to-one engagement with a business leader who has done it - and who will help you think more clearly, decide more confidently, and lead more effectively at the moments that matter most.

Who This Is For

Executive mentoring with ValueStep is designed for leaders who are operating at a level where the decisions carry real weight and the pressure is real.

That includes:

First-time CEOs and MDs stepping into the role and needing a trusted sounding board who has no agenda other than their success.

Founders who have built something significant and are hitting the ceiling - growth, structure, team, or their own leadership bandwidth.

Experienced leaders navigating a critical inflexion point - a restructure, an acquisition, a succession, a board challenge, or a period of sustained pressure.

High-potential executives are being developed for the top job and need honest, unfiltered input alongside their formal development.

Business owners preparing for a transaction - sale, investment, or exit - and needing a clear head and experienced counsel in the room.

If you are carrying decisions that are too important to get wrong and too complex to think through alone, this is the conversation.

What We Work On

The agenda is yours. The sessions are built around what you are actually facing, not a standing curriculum.

In practice, that tends to mean:

Strategic clarity

When the direction is unclear, the options are competing, or the next move is not obvious.

Leadership under pressure

Managing performance, making difficult calls on people, and holding the line when it is uncomfortable.

Commercial decisions

Pricing, contracts, negotiation, risk. The decisions where experience matters as much as analysis.

The hard conversations

The ones that do not belong in the boardroom and cannot wait.

How It Works

Candid

The value of this relationship is in what does not get said elsewhere. Expect directness, not diplomacy.

Practical

Every session ends with clarity — on the situation, the options, and the next move. Not reflection for its own sake.

Confidential

What is discussed stays between us. Full stop.

Flexible

Engagements are structured to suit the situation. Monthly sessions for ongoing support. Intensive periods around key decisions. Short-term advisory when something specific needs resolving. No fixed format, no standing agenda.

Experience-led

The input is grounded in 35 years of operational leadership — founding and scaling businesses, leading global operations, managing turnarounds, and sitting at every level of the board. Not theory. Not a coaching model. Real experience applied to your situation.

The Experience Behind It

Executive mentoring at ValueStep draws on the combined experience of three senior business leaders. Between them, they have operated across the full spectrum of high-stakes leadership - from national infrastructure programmes and multi-billion pound public sector investment to SME turnaround, financial restructuring, and enterprise value creation.

James Leng

Co-Founder and Executive Director, ValueStep

James has spent 35 years operating at the sharp end of business — founding Augmentis Plc and growing it to £6.5m revenue before its sale to a US acquirer for $16m; leading the Revo Group through a sixfold revenue transformation across 45 countries; and advising businesses across construction, manufacturing, automotive, health, education, and professional services through some of the most complex periods of their lives.

He has been the CEO facing the difficult board. The founder deciding whether to sell. The turnaround leader brought in when the situation was serious. The executive who had to make the call with imperfect information and no room for error.

That is the experience he brings to the room. Not as a framework. As a conversation.

Robert Osborne

Co-Founder and Executive Director, ValueStep

Robert brings decades of strategic leadership across both public and private sectors — holding board-level positions as Chair, Chief Executive, Executive Director, and Non-Executive Director across publicly listed companies, privately held businesses, and national public agencies.

His background spans major construction, infrastructure, and project finance programmes, and he has operated as client, advisor, investor, contractor, and subcontractor on some of the most complex programmes in the UK. He is Chair of Acumen7, the infrastructure, energy, and futures think tank.

Robert brings a rare depth of governance and strategic perspective that few advisors can match — the kind that only comes from having occupied every seat at the table.

Martin Haywood

FCMA, CGMA — ValueStep Associate

Martin is a Chartered Management Accountant with over 30 years of experience working inside SME businesses at the moments when financial control, performance, and direction matter most. He has operated as Portfolio Finance Director, Non-Executive Director, and specialist intervention lead — turning around underperforming businesses, rebuilding financial frameworks, and building the management information that enables leaders to make clear decisions under pressure.

His particular strength is in manufacturing and automotive - sectors where margin is tight and the consequences of poor decision-making show up fast.

This is not a panel. Each mentoring relationship is one-to-one. But when the situation calls for it, the full depth of this experience is available to the leaders we work with.
